Regent's Canal clear-out reveals safes, tyres and a 3ft carp

Engineers carrying out £250,000 repair works have drained more than seven million gallons of water from a stretch of Regent’s Canal, unearthing safes, trolleys and tyres.
The 3,280ft stretch between Johnson Lock and Limehouse Basin has been emptied to allow bricklayers to repair 3ft holes in the canal wall as part of the Canal and River Trust’s £45 million winter restoration scheme across its 2,000-mile network.
Alongside hundreds of fish, including 3ft-long carp weighing 25lb, the charity found thousands of plastic bags, an office chair and a hoover dumped in the waterway.
