Plans are being drawn up to rebuild Walworth Town Hall, in south London, after a fire destroyed the building almost two years ago.
The roof of the Grade II listed building in Walworth Road was destroyed in a blaze in March 2013 which forced the Cuming Museum to close and Newington Library to be relocated.
Southwark Council said it would hire an architect in the spring.
A public consultation is being held on initial designs.
The Cuming Museum, founded in 1906 with the Cuming family's private collection, held artefacts from all over the world, including objects from Roman London, Chinese ornaments and African tribal costumes.
About 500 artefacts were saved from the museum and are being held in storage. Meanwhile the library has a temporary home on the site of the Elephant and Castle regeneration project.
Southwark councillor Mark Williams said: "The renovation of this historic building will play a key part in the wider regeneration of the area, this will include a new library, a new home for the Cuming Museum and community space. We want local residents involved every step of the way."
Southwark Council said three architects had been hired to draw up a design based on the council's requirements with the winning bid due to be selected in the spring. The rebuild is likely to take a number of years to complete, a council spokeswoman added. More
