The sun is shining, the garden is in full bloom, and we have a jam-packed month of events coming up this July including Owen Sheers (above) in conversation with Piers Plowright as part of our ever-popular Lifelines series.
With exhibitions, talks, walks and recitals there is something to whet everyone's appetite at Burgh House.

Hello from Hampstead! Discovering a history through postcards

17 July - 13 December

Hello from Hampstead!  will examine the history of postcards in the UK including their peak of usage during the Golden Age and decline following the outbreak of the First World War. This exhibition focuses on the use of postcards in Hampstead and the depiction of local landmarks.

Burgh House’s extensive postcard collection will be featured in the exhibition along with two objects from other museums. A stuffed badger from the Horniman Museum will be on display from 17 July to 18 October as part of the Object in Focusproject funded by the Arts Council.  A Georgian post box from the Postal Museum and Archive will also be on display.





Old Hampstead Rediscovered 5: Changing Scenes

11 June - 13 September

This Heath & Hampstead Society-curated exhibition of paintings from Camden Local Studies and Archives Centre is accompanied by modern photographs providing a contrast to the historic 18th, 19th and 20th century artists' views.
 

Peter Steedman Photography

Wed  1  – Sun 12 July

Local photographer Peter Steedman will be returning to Burgh House with a new selection of works. There will be a range of styles, including abstract and landscape.



 

Ken Adams: Unbounded

Wed 15 – Sun 19 July

A new group of paintings by artist Ken Adams who  returns to Burgh House. Some are large, some small, some abstract, some figurative, all concerned with his passion for colour. Ken last exhibited here in 2011.
 

Judy Logan: Memory & Reality

Wed 22  – Sun 26 July

An exciting show of new paintings and prints.
Judy responds intuitively to the unexpected, crazy and constantly surprising   encounters in her daily life. These are at once personal and universal and include things that effect us all such as happiness, jealousy, love and longing.
 

Emi Fujisawa: Timeless Tale 

Wed 29 July - Sun 2 August

An exploration of how time changes textiles.
Inspired by time-honoured textiles and techniques, Emi has developed weaves in natural dye, which focus on natural, sustainable, and ethical materials.




 

Walks

Treasures of the Heath: Clues to the landscape and its history

Arts and Crafts of the Garden Suburb

Sunday 26 July, 2:00pm

The walk traces the early history and developments of Hampstead Garden Suburb and includes the Heath Extension, Central Square - designed by Edwin Lutyens, and the original Artisans quarter designed from 1907 by Parker and Unwin. The walk starts outside the main entrance to Golders Green Tube station and ends at Temple fortune on the Finchley Road. Visit www.citylit.ac.uk for fees and booking.
 

Hampstead Summer Festival

Sunday 5 July, 11am-5pm

We are delighted to welcome Linda Chung to Burgh House as the new chair of the Friends Committee - she will be supporting us at Hampstead Summer festival this coming Sunday so if you're passing by do come and say hello!
Any willing volunteers to help out on the stall will be extremely welcome - just turn up to our stall, which will be on Heath Street.

A free concert featuring pianist Rudi Eastwood. Featuring- Six Impromptus Op.5, Sonatina in F sharp minor Op.67, Sonatina in E major Op.67 No 2,Two Rondinos Op.68, Pensees lyriques Op.40 and Sonata in F major, Op.12. This concert is supported by The Sibelius Society of Finland.

Camden History Society: History of St Michael's Church, Highgate
Thursday 16 July, 7:30pm

Roger Sainsbury has recently  published a well-reviewed book about the curiously complicated history of St Michael's and the parish it serves. This talk will feature images of this beautiful church whose spire dominates the view from Hampstead Heath.
Non-members welcome,  £1 at the door.
 

Lifelines with Owen Sheers
Thursday 23 July, 7pm for 7:30pm

Welsh writer Owen Sheers talks with Piers Plowright as part of the long-running Lifelines series of talks. Sheers, an eminent and award-winning poet, has also achieved success as an actor, playwright and TV presenter – and was the first-ever Writer in Residence for the Welsh Rugby Union.

Lifelines with Angela Hewitt
Thursday 30 July, 7pm for 7:30pm

We are delighted to be welcoming renowned pianist Angela Hewitt to Burgh House for the latest in our Lifelines series of talks. Angela, who has received particular praise for her performances and recordings of Bach, will be chatting about her life and career with broadcaster Piers Plowright (there will be no musical performance).
