Current Displays
The Second Hand: Reworked Art Over Time

Until 19 July 2015

Take time to explore this exhibition of historical and contemporary works, which involve one artist actively engaging with the work of another. This involves physical reworking of the original object, or it can mean altering, completing or challenging another artist’s idea.

The Second Hand raises questions about artistic intent, the nature of authorship, and the multi-layered meanings of works that in different ways bear the mark of more than one hand.

Curated by the students of the Courtauld’s MA Curating the Art Museumin response to this year's Summer Showcase, Unfinished... Works From the Courtauld Gallery.

Until 20 September 2015

The latest Drawings Gallery display looks to portraits and a little-known series by Jonathan Richardson the Elder, one of eighteenth-century England’s most significant cultural figures.

See Richardson adopting a wide range of poses, guises and dress, in some cases deliberately evoking other artists, such as Rembrandt and Bernini, whose works he owned.

Also included in the display are four portraits of Richardson’s beloved eldest son, who shared his artistic and literary interests. Richardson was so close to his son that he even referred to him as ‘my other Self’.
