Queen Elizabeth’s Foundation for Disabled People (QEF) celebrates its 80th birthday in 2015. This garden acknowledges the practical and life-transforming work undertaken by this national charity with severely disabled children and adults. This garden has been inspired by people with acquired brain injuries and the continuing need to look at the problems they face in new ways.
The garden’s peaceful space encourages individuals to take time out to listen and understand what matters to them as well as seeking creative ways to look at challenges in their life in a new way. This quiet, reflective space is partly enclosed by soft hornbeam hedging, which provides a green backdrop for large, tinted and aged mirrors. The mirrors push out of the hedges into the garden. They reflect both the internal space of the garden, the trees, and planting, and the visitors looking in from outside. Three multi-stemmed trees provide dappled shade with ferns and shade-loving perennials positioned behind and creating rich shadows and reflections.
