The Model Boating Pond is currently being dredged as part of the controversial £15million dams project to protect the Heath ponds from flooding.
Crowds of curious walkers stopped by the pond last night to see the car – thought to be a Mark 3 Ford Cortina – emerge from the muddy depths.
This morning, the vehicle was clearly visible on the bed of the pond with its front passenger window rolled down.
Bystanders this morning said they believe the car has been lying underneath the pond’s waters for at least 25 years.

Richard Gentry, head of the City of London’s Hampstead Heath Constabulary, said: “A car has been exposed and a metallic eagle found by contractors during safety works to the Model Boating Pond. Both objects have been reported to the Metropolitan Police as they may be of evidential value.”
