Discovery Motion Theatre

In 1938, the Mallard set the world record for the fastest ever steam locomotive at 126mph - a record which still stands unbeaten. See the real characters that took part, fly around the engine and experience all the sounds and sights of this amazing record breaking run in our exciting new 3D film, showing in our Discovery Motion Theatre.

How do you turn a well-known historical event into a 3D motion ride? Bob Gwynne, Associate Curator at the National Railway Museum explains the research that was undertaken to create our Mallard 3D experience.
2015 is the year of light! Celebrate by visiting our drop-in workshop and building your very own lantern projector. Explainers will be on hand to help you put together a simple electrical circuit and use an image from our collection.
Fancy being a detective for the day? Step into our Detective Trail to learn about the science showcased in our 3D IMAX films. Explore our galleries and solve unique challenges to reveal clues and decipher a secret code!
