Burgh House & Hampstead Museum - What's On

Master Craftsman at work...

As our Renaissance Appeal to secure the future of Burgh House continues, it's the turn of our beautiful 1720 barley-twist oak staircase to have some long overdue attention. Two exquisite, newly-made spindles to replace badly damaged and missing pieces followed by a bit of general TLC to make the banister sturdy and wax and polish after, they will be looking great and ready for the next 296 years!
We are delighted to announce that we have already raised half of the monies required to save the house, thanks greatly to the generosity of the community. If you can make a donation, however, large or small, to help get us to our £120,000 target please click here

...thanks!

George Charlton:

Formative Figures
Exhibition
Until Sun 8 May

This exhibition brings together a collection of George Charlton’s Slade School nude studies, painted works and personal letters to tell the story of his professional and personal life in Hampstead in the 1930s. George and Daphne Charlton purchased 40 New End Square in 1932, and it quickly became a hub of artistic activity. Featuring recently acquired personal correspondence illustrating important milestones in his artistic life, this exhibition aims to give a personal insight into Charlton’s artistic development, as well as a glimpse into his at times controversial personal life. Ian Kellam, in his catalogue for a retrospective of both the Charltons’ work, remarked that George was a “quiet and gentle romantic, so moved by feminine beauty.” The works on display from the Burgh House collection serve to illustrate this side to George Charlton’s character while charting his progression from student to professional artist.
