ENGINEERING THE WORLD: OVE ARUP AND THE PHILOSOPHY OF TOTAL DESIGN 18 June – 6 November 2016 The Porter Gallery This is the first ever major retrospective of Ove Arup (1895-1988), the most influential engineer of the 20th century and the pioneer of a multidisciplinary approach to design that has defined the way engineering is understood and practiced today. ELYTRA FILAMENT PAVILION 18 May – 6 November 2016 The John Madejski Garden This major new garden commission created by experimental architects and engineers Achim Menges, Jan Knippers, Moritz Dörstelmann and Thomas Auer, is a pavilion inspired by the filament structures of the forewing shells of flying beetles, known as elytra. The installation takes the form of an undulating canopy structure composed of a network of tightly-woven carbon fibre cells, fabricated by a robot. Read more  Free, drop in   MIND OVER MATTER: CONTEMPORARY BRITISH ENGINEERING15 June – 6 November 2016 V&A + RIBA Architecture Gallery, Room 128a This display will present a series of major, cutting-edge projects by British engineering firms such as AKT II, Atelier One, Buro Happold, Expedition Engineering and Jane Wernick Associates.
