What's On - Burgh House & Hampstead Museum

Say goodbye to the February blues...

with our fantastic programme of events this month! It may be the shortest month of the year, but we have even more events for you to enjoy. We are kicking off this month with our first Lifelines of the year with Rose Tremain on the 2nd (last tickets available online), our Chinese New Year celebrations on the 12th, and we have oodles of concerts, talks and activities around our brilliant exhibitions. We have something for everyone- so make sure you pop in and visit us!

Michael Simkins: An Actor's Life For Me

Sunday 29 January, 7:30pm

Have you ever wanted to know what it’s really like to be an actor? Perhaps you want to have a go yourself but don’t know where to start? Well, now’s your chance to find out. Local resident Michael Simkins has been there, done that, and got the T shirt. For over forty years he’s been a regular face on the west end stage and on your TV screens, and filming safety training videos on the correct use of fire extinguishers in the workplace. He even briefly achieved national fame, due to him constantly being mistaken in the street for Jeremy Vine during the 2015 series of "Strictly Come Dancing…"

Schubertiade

Sunday 5 February, 6pm

Concert Party once again presents its popular celebration of the works of Franz
Schubert. This year they are staging a benefit concert for Burgh House and its piano. The programme will include Schubert songs, instrumental works and piano duets, in addition to poetry and readings by his contemporaries. In keeping with the original Schubertiades,they promise a memorable and festive occasion with contributions from amateurs and professionals – plus a few surprise guests! Performers include Mark Lacey (clarinet), Madeleine Ridd (cello) and pianists Victoria Hartung and Robin Rubenstein.
Tickets are £10 on the door.

The Rubenstein Trio: Chamber Music Recital

Sunday 5 February, 2pm

The Rubenstein Trio – Mark Lacey (clarinet), Madeleine Ridd (cello) and Robin Rubenstein (piano) – present a programme of duos and trios by Mozart, Weber, Beethoven and Boccherini for the wonderfully versatile and mellow mix of clarinet, cello and piano. They have chosen works by composers who either influenced or were contemporary with Franz Schubert, featured in the Schubertiade at 6pm.

Music from Latin America and Spain

Enjoy this vibrant and colourful musical journey crafted by two fine soloists, Adrian Azuelo (guitar) and Ricardo Curbelo (harp, cuatro & vocals).

Retracing Ribeiro

The Hampstead painter Lancelot Ribeiro was one of the most original of the Indian artists who settled in Britain in the post-war period. A new temporary exhibition of his works at Burgh House will launch a year-long Retracing Ribeiro programme of events, supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund and being celebrated as part of the 2017 UK-India Year of Culture, in partnership with The British Museum, V&A, Central Saint Martins and Camden Archives.

Burgh House Celebrates the Chinese New Year

Sunday 12 February, 11am-4pm

Join Burgh House in celebrating the Chinese New Year of the Rooster. Following the success of last year’s celebrations, we bring you a great day
of festivities. We begin at 11am with the breathtaking Lion Dance on the High Street, then back to Burgh House, where there will be craft activities for all ages, stalls, demonstrations and entertainment with a Chinese theme. Check out our website for more details.

Ishbel McWhirter: Scrutiny and Revelation A 90th Birthday Restrospective

Wednesday 11 January-Sunday 26 March

Ishbel McWhirter was born in 1927 and lives and works in Hampstead, London and Anglesey, North Wales. Showcasing works spanning from the 1940s to the present, this exhibition will be the first comprehensive survey of her work across seven decades. Coinciding with McWhirter’s 90thbirthday, it will celebrate her achievements as an artist. Charting her stylistic developments, personal relationships and singular sensitivities, it aims to communicate what makes McWhirter so distinctive and unique as a 20th century artist.

In Colours and Blocks you can see different periods of Sara’s work experimenting with Cubism and abstract expressionism, especially colour fields.

Camden History Society: Played in Camden

Thursday 16 February, 7.30pm

An illustrated lecture by Simon Inglis, editor of the English Heritage series Played in Britain. Inglis traces sporting development in the area, from forgotten or little-known locations with a sporting connection, such as the last Old English skittles alley in London, to bowling greens, swimming pools and lidos, gymnasiums and rugby and cricket clubs. Non-members welcome. £1 on the door.

Hampstead Horticultural Society: AGM

London Natural History Society Bird Talk

Thursday 23 February, 7pm

Martyn Kenefick talks about one of the Caribbean's first conservation centres. The Asa Wright Nature Centre offers visitors a gateway to Trinidad & Tobago’s 482 species of bird, 68 different bats, 45 snakes, 765 butterflies and 3,500 moth species, representing a true introduction to the natural history of South America.

Life in Suetsugi 末続  暮らしの写真展

The exhibition Life in Suetsugi 末続  暮らしの写真展 focuses on people’s ordinary lives in Suetsugi, and features pictures taken by photographer Jun Takagi after the devastating 2011 earthquake off the Pacific coast of Tōhoku. 

Lifelines with Rose Tremain CBE

Thursday 2 February, 7:30pm

Journalist and producer Piers Plowright chats with award-winning Author and Chancellor of the University of East Anglia Rose Tremain, whose novels and short stories have been published worldwide in 27 countries and have won many prizes, including the Sunday Express book of the Year Award; the Prix Femina Etranger, France; the Whitbread Novel of the Year Award and the Orange Prize for Fiction 2008 . Restoration was filmed in 1995 and a stage version was produced in 2009. Her latest novel is the acclaimed The Gustav Sonata which sees Rose writing at the height of her inimitable powers (Observer). Ishbel McWhirter: Restrospective

A retrospective of Hampstead artist Ishbel McWhirter will showcase
a selection of evocative seascapes, portraits and depictions of street life in pencil, watercolour and oil. Running alongside the current museum exhibition, Scrutiny and Revelation spanning the 1940s to the present day.

Coast to Coast: The Shore and More

Prepare to take a voyage curated through the eyes of five very talented painters who offer us their unique perspective of the coast, from boats and journeys, to rocks and groins, with views from and to the sea that evoke a special moment or emotion. The artists are Chris Filtness, Tony Hatt, Tom Marsh, Michael Major and Sula Rubens.

Curated by Museum Intern Liberte Reilly as part of the series of exhibitions on the first-floor landing of the House, showcasing works from our collection stores. Destruction/ Construction looks at the edges of Hampstead beyond the pristine image.  Featuring photographs, water-colours and an oil pastel the exhibition covers a wide range of art styles, mediums and periods.  Come look at the ongoing processes of renovation and construction that make our Hampstead and shape its future.
