Art Night is a free contemporary arts festival transforming London’s East End for one unforgettable night, in collaboration with Whitechapel Gallery.
Art Night 2017 takes place this Saturday 1 July, presenting acclaimed international art in various historic and iconic sites, secret locations and public spaces.
Conceived as new site-specific commissions, Art Night 2017 responds directly to east London’s heritage and diversity. Participating artists are Charles AveryJake & Dinos ChapmanBenedict DrewAnne HardyLawrence Lek, Melanie ManchotLindsay SeersDo Ho SuhGüneş Terkol and Ian Whittlesea.
Art Night 2017 is in collaboration with Whitechapel Gallery and curated by Fatos Üstek. The festival is supported by international auction house Phillips, and receives public funding from the National Lottery through Arts Council England.

Art Night features 12 free projects and a Club Night, alongside its associate programme of 60 events, most are free and open to all.

Art Night 2017: Benedict Drew

As part of Art Night 2017, artist Benedict Drew collaborates with experimental musicians on a durational performance with video and live music. Located in his exhibition The Trickle-Down Syndrome, the performance brings together a group of leading experimental musicians to produce exhilarating sounds of increasing intensity throughout the night.

Lawrence Lek: Play Station

What is the future of employment in an increasingly automated society? Artist Lawrence Lek is joined by curator Fatoş Üstek to discuss his commission for Art Night 2017, a video game ‘job simulator’ where all labour is disguised as leisure. A site-specific VR installation for the recently redeveloped White Chapel Building – previously owned by the Royal Bank of Scotland – Lek’s new work reflects on the relationship between labour and play.
