This November Photography, Parliament and Swing We have a busy calendar this November with a special event on Wednesday 29 November celebrating women and photography, two talks during Parliament Week and the Swing Spectacular featuring a live set from Naomi and her Handsome Devils. SPOTLIGHT: WOMEN AND PHOTOGRAPHY   Format Photographers Agency and Hackney Flashers Our Special Collections and Archives team recently received landmark additions of material for the Format Photography Agency Archive. Format was set up as an agency in 1983 to support women photographers to represent issues, events and individuals who got very little coverage in the mainstream media. Format will be joined by The Hackney Flashers for a special event at the Institute on Wednesday 29 November. BOOK NOW THE UNTOLD STORY OF SANDYS ROW TALK Wednesday 1 November | 19:00 - 20:00 | £9, £5 concession Writer and social historian Rachel Lichtenstein discusses the story of London’s oldest functioning Ashkenazi synagogue, situated in the heart of the former Jewish East End. BOOK NOW SWING SPECTACULAR Social Swing dance featuring Naomi and Handsome Devils Friday 3 November  | 19:00 - Midnight £20, £15 concession, £25 door Presented in partnership with Swing Patrol. Naomi and her Handsome Devils are in London for one night only. With live performances from the band throughout the night, as well as vintage DJs, this Swing social dance for dancers of all levels will be a very special opportunity to lindy hop the night away. One saw the abdication of a centuries-old dynasty, the other a seizure of power by one faction of a resistance movement many decades in the making. At this special evening event, discover the big ideas, pivotal events and key players that led up to the seismic moments in history of 1917, and find out what happened next. BOOK NOW PARLIAMENT WEEK TALKS Tuesday 14 November: Parliament and Parliamentarians Wednesday 15 November: Phyll Opoku-Gyimah As part of UK Parliament Week 2018, we have two special events exploring parliament, politics, protest and pride. On Tuesday 14, join our Special Collections and Archives team as they introduce treasures from the archives of the many MPs whose collections we hold including Bernie Grant. On Tuesday 15, co-founder and Executive Director of UK Black Pride Phyll Opoku-Gyimah explores campaigning and its place within the UK’s parliamentary democracy, what it means to protest outside the seat of government, and how activism has effected change.  BOOK NOW HISTORY SHOWOFF COMEDY/CABARET Wednesday 22 November | 19:30 - 22:00 | £9 History Showoff is the chaotic comedy cabaret all about the past and the people who make it. You'll see eight brilliant experts on the past, corralled by compere Steve Cross who can barely remember last week, let alone understand the renaissance. Hosted by geek comedian, presenter and producer Steve Cross, founder of Science Showoff and Bright Club.
