The Last Tsar: Blood and Revolution

2018 marks 100 years since the death of the Romanov family, the last imperial monarchs of Russia. Rulers of a sixth of the surface of the earth, their lives glittered with unimaginable wealth and power.
In this new exhibition, we explore the lives of Tsar Nicholas II and his family, the mysterious circumstances of their death, and medicine in Russia at the time.
From the Tsar's son Alexei's Haemophilia B, a rare blood condition passed down from Queen Victoria, to the infamous mystic Rasputin, we'll take you behind closed doors to explore what life was really like for this famous royal family.

Highlight: Faberge Egg

Some of our star objects

We'll be showing objects which have never before been put on public display in the UK. You'll be able to see some of the family’s clothing, unique historical documents and even a Faberge egg on loan from the Moscow Kremlin Museums.
This unique Faberge was given by the Tsar to the Tsarina just a year before the fall of the Imperial house.

A century long investigation

The modern forensic science

In 1918 the family disappeared, suspected by many to have been killed in the civil war which followed the Russian Revolution. 
We'll examine a crime scene littered with personal effects - the dentures of their doctor, a single diamond earring belonging to the Tsarina - and explore the extraordinary modern forensic investigation which set out to piece together the events of that night.
