Manga has been provocative and playful from its inception.
On 30 June 1880, artist Kawanabe Kyōsai painted a 17-metre-long stage curtain in only four hours (after a few bottles of rice wine!). The artwork was a humorous homage to the Shintomi Theater's actors, who Kyōsai depicted as monsters – the artist's spontaneous wit caused a sensation and his work stands at the root of modern manga.
