Tantra: enlightenment to revolution

Explore the radical philosophy that transformed the religious, cultural and political landscape of India and beyond in this powerful exhibition.
Originating in early medieval India, Tantra had a huge impact on Hinduism and Buddhism from the 6th century onwards. The show will look at the rise of Tantra and how it has been interpreted and harnessed throughout history – including during colonial rule and the Indian fight for independence.
Also on display are works of art which illustrate how Tantra was reimagined during the global rise of 1960s counterculture. 21st-century photographs and installations will examine Tantra’s role in the world today, and how it has influenced contemporary feminist thought and artistic practice.
