The Gulf War

Carrying the colours

Save the colours! The Battle of Laing's Nek was fought 140 years ago, in January 1881. It was to be the last time that colours were ever carried into battle by a British regiment. Thus ended the long tradition of guarding these precious flags–both sacred symbols of their units and important rallying points–on the battlefield.
