First Time Out makes an entrance |
Look out for unusual objects in the Central Hall this month as part of First Time Out, a collaboration between 10 museums and galleries that are exhibiting never-before-seen treasures. Halfway through the project, institutions will swap objects and give their host artefacts a new interpretation.
Until 3 July we will be displaying a rough-toothed dolphin skull from our collection. From 4–31 July we will be hosting a bone guillotine model from our partner, Peterborough Museum.

Angry bird's unique wing weapon |
 |
© Julian Hume |
The solitaire bird was a giant flightless pigeon and, like its closest relative the dodo, became extinct soon after European explorers settled in its habitat. It had a strange knob-like ball on its wing and although it was known to be aggressive, it was unclear what this structure was for, until now.
Museum scientists Julian Hume and Lorna Steel discovered that the ball was in fact a deadly weapon. 'In life, the musket ball would have been covered by a hard skin, almost like a boxing glove,' says Julian. |
