Imperial War Museums - Flying Days: The Americans

IWM | IMPERIAL WAR MUSEUMS

In 1943, Duxford became home to the 78th Fighter Group of the US Army Air Force.
Join us for Flying Days: The Americans26 July 2024 at IWM Duxford, and discover a tale of two countries bound by duty.

The 78th Fighter Group formed in 1942 when the US entered the Second World War. That November, they relocated to RAF Goxhill in Lincolnshire. Later, they moved to RAF Duxford, which was designated as US Army Air Force Station 357.

Duxford was luxurious compared with the basic accommodations at Goxhill, with heated brick buildings, hot water and bathing facilities. Nearby, there was also a theatre, sports fields, and an Officer's club with a bar and slot machines.

The 78th Fighter Group's final mission of the Second World War took place on 25 April 1945. They left Duxford that October after flying 450 missions, sadly leaving England with 113 American pilots less than they arrived with.

As a charity, every Flying Days: The Americans ticket purchase helps us continue to tell stories for future generations. Final tickets remaining.
