Wounded: Conflict, Casualties and Care Opens 29 June Free entry Coming soon to the Science Museum, a brand new exhibition to mark the centenary of the Battle of the Somme. On 1 July 1916 British forces sustained 57,000 casualties, creating a medical emergency of unprecedented scale and severity. For many soldiers their moment of wounding on the battlefields could be the start of a long and life-changing journey. Those that survived evacuation, transportation and treatment returned home to a life that was vastly different to the one they had left. Discover the stories of injured soldiers and those who cared for them, as we uncover the remarkable innovations in medical practices and technologies that developed in response to this new kind of industrialised warfare. Visit Wounded to witness the impact that the First World War had on the many millions of soldiers and civilians who were left physically and mentally affected by the events of 1914-1918.
