Aldwych station tours
Aldwych toursNovember 2013
Deep below the streets of London lie the disused platforms and tunnels of Aldwych Underground station. Only rarely open to the public, London Transport Museum is hosting special public tours which take place in November 2013. Aldwych is one of London's mysterious places, holding secrets and memories of the city's forgotten life and work underground. It opened to the public in 1907, but was never heavily used and eventually closed permanently in 1994. The station has had a varied history: it provided shelter to Londoners and precious artworks during the Blitz; and has been used for film shoots including V for Vendetta,Atonement and The Deep Blue Sea. Tickets must be booked in advance.

Another new display showcases the Fairway FX4 taxi, which is retiring from licensed service to make way for newer cabs with lower emissions. A London icon, this classic cab has worked on our Capital's streets since 1958. Over the years, new models were issued with modifications to the gearbox, engine and interior. The final FX4 update was the wheelchair-accessible Fairway in 1989.The Fairway spirit lives on in today's TX-type taxis, which have adopted and adapted the FX4's distinctive shape and style.
