Museum Of Brands, Packaging and Advertising- The Story of BIC® Cristal®

BIC
Inkspiration: The Story of BIC® Cristal®: New Exhibition at the Museum of Brands
From 1-30 April 2011 an exhibition of art inspired by an iconic brand will be held at the Museum of Brands, Packaging and Advertising in Notting Hill. To celebrate the invention of the BIC® Cristal® ball pen 60 years ago, artists from around the globe have provided sculptures, portraits, a  haute couture dress and even ‘Cristal® chandeliers’ for the new exhibition called Inkspiration: The Story of BIC® Cristal®.
On show will be a recreation of Vermeer’s Girl with a Pearl Earring, drawn entirely using a single BIC® Cristal® pen, as well as sculptures incorporating the pen itself. If visitors feel inspired, they can also grab a Cristal® and draw or write on a special ‘doodle wall’ where they can express their thoughts.
Considered an icon of modern design, the BIC® Cristal® pen is on permanent display at MOMA in New York and the Pompidou Centre in Paris. Robert Opie, founder of the Museum of Brands, believes the London museum is the perfect location for Inkspiration: The Story of BIC® Cristal®. He said, “Our museum celebrates brands which survive the test of time, like BIC® Cristal®, so we’re delighted to host its 60th anniversary exhibition.”
Yolande de Trogoff, spokesperson for BIC, agrees. She said, “There are few brands which are able to claim the longevity and iconic values that Cristal® has, and it has established itself firmly in our hearts over the past six decades.”
Quick Cristal Facts
·         160 BIC® Cristal® pens are sold every minute in the UK – that’s a couple of million per day worldwide!
·         A single BIC® Cristal® pen can write for up to 2 kilometres
·         Black ink is more popular in the UK, Italy and the Nordics, while the rest of Europe has a tradition of using blue ink
·         The ball in the nib of each BIC® Cristal® pen is made of tungsten carbide powder and a fatty additive, and are vitrified in an oven to become almost as hard as a diamond
·         The “BIC boy” that features in the BIC® logo was created at BIC’s request by the French artist Raymond Savignac in 1961. This schoolboy with a ball point head and a pen hiding behind his back has become the emblem of the BIC® brand and all BIC® products
