The Friends of Kensal Green Cemetery

Anglican Chapel, Kensal Green
The Friends of Kensal Green Cemetery

The General Cemetery of All Souls, Kensal Green, is one of England's oldest and most beautiful public burial grounds, and certainly its most prestigious. One of the world's first garden cemeteries, and doyen of London's Magnificent Seven, Kensal Green received its first funeral in January 1833, and still conducts burials and cremations daily. The cemetery was innovative in having most of the site consecrated by the Church of England, but reserving the eastern spur for Dissenters and others to practise their own rites. Today, people of many faiths and denominations are buried throughout the cemetery. Uniquely among British cemeteries, Kensal Green has been managed by the same private joint-stock company since its inception: the General Cemetery Company (est. 1830) still has its offices by the Main Gate. The cemetery now covers some 72 acres (29 hectares) between the Grand Union Canal and Harrow Road in west London, and is open to visitors every day of the year.

Spend your summer holiday in Space

As you enter the Science Museum you can pick up a passport and travel through different galleries collecting codes and discovering amazing space facts. At the end of your space adventure once you have all the codes, make sure you pick up your souvenir of your trip...
Explore the space gallery and marvel at rockets and satellites as well as the full-sized replica of 'Eagle' – the lander that took astronauts Armstrong and Aldrin to the Moon in 1969.
As you continue your journey you’ll find the original Apollo 10 Command Module In Making the Modern World– the capsule which travelled around the Moon in 1969 shortly before the Apollo 11 landing which followed in July.
Find out how we've explored the universe in Cosmos & Culture, a gallery all about astronomy, and get to grips with the laws of gravity in the ever popular hands-on Launchpad gallery.
Plus you can journey deep into space with the IMAX 3D Cinema, showing Hubble 3D and Space Station 3D. Or why not enjoy Legend of Apollo at our Force Field 4D effects theatre which allows you to feel the impact of a Saturn V launch, take a trip on the lunar rover and discover the smell of space.

The Greenwich Fair- London for Free

Greenwich Fayre

Fri 24 – Sun 26 June FREE
Until 150 years ago, when it was closed down for being too unruly, the Greenwich Fair was the largest and most uproarious gathering of outdoor entertainment in Britain. Much loved by Charles Dickens, the high spirited activities included sideshows, dancing booths, travelling menageries and melodramas boasting 3 murders and a ghost in 25 minutes!

This year a 21st century version of the Greenwich Fair returns as a “festival within a festival” with a huge programme of outdoor performing arts. As London’s first ever showcase of its kind, you can expect to experience the best of UK and international outdoor arts. Some performances will even take direct inspiration from the past: the Victorian enthusiasm for hill-rolling in Greenwich Park will be recalled in gravity-defying performances, alongside side-show installations, an outdoor aquarium, interactive entertainment, and life-sized Punch and Judy!

Take a Look at London- Bull & Bush

Bull & Bush (originally to be named North End, but more recently given the nickname Bull & Bush by London Underground Staff) is unique on this site in having the distinction of being a closed Underground station that never even opened! Originally planned to be the deepest station on the whole Underground network at 200 feet below ground level, problems with planning due to the proposed surface station being built in a conserved area and the fact that the surface level wasn't highly populated meant that the station was abandoned effectively before it was even built. Relative depth

Looking out of the train window between Hampstead & Golders Green, it can be seen that little building work has been done apart from the widening of the tube tunnel. There appears to be a partially built south bound platform and no cladding on the walls. Some subsurface tunnels were built before work was abandoned and if you look really carefully, a staircase can be seen leading up from the "platform" area
The station's nickname is derived from The Old Bull And Bush pub, located a quarter of a mile away from the location's surface entrance. This is the same Bull and Bush, popularised in a music hall song of the 1920s called "Down at the Old Bull and Bush" sung by Florrie Forde.

Bull & Bush has had its uses over the years; during the 1950s, it was rumoured to be London Transport's potential emergency headquarters in the event of a nuclear detonation in or near London and at around this time, access to the station from the surface in the form of a spiral staircase was finally provided. Later, it is believed to have become one of the control centres for the Underground's floodgate system, which could be triggered to operate in the event of a tunnel breach under the Thames. If there were a breach at City (the deepest section of the Central Line), it would take 4 minutes for un-stopped water to reach Holborn...

The location again saw action when an experimental sound reducing tunnel lining installed along the south bound running tunnel had to be removed as it was made from asbestos!

Signs on the gate and on the building's door indicate that the site is also a designated emergency exit point for the Underground network.

Regent Palace History

In a recent episode of “The Apprentice”  dealing with rubbish disposal and scrap dealing showed the stripping out of the old site where the Throgmorton Café was which was owned by J. Lyons and Company ( the entrance still bears the name ) This took me back to the days of the Regent Palace Hotel when its first Manager  Mr Delaloye  he opened the hotel was finally moved to he was originally promoted from The Trocadero Restauarant ,  Picadilly Circus.
