Broken hearts and broken vows abound in Gilbert and Sullivan’s Shakespearean comedy It's the final week of our 2024 Season and we open our fourth co-production with Charles Court Opera: Gilbert and Sullivan’s tongue-twisting Shakespearean comedy, The Yeomen of the Guard. In the gloomy bulk of the Tower of London, Colonel Fairfax awaits his execution for the trumped up crime of sorcery. Helplessly in love with Fairfax, Phoebe Meryll is but one of the characters whose heart is as vulnerable as the colonel’s head in Gilbert and Sullivan’s tongue-twisting Shakespearean comedy. With the arrival of two strolling players, Jack Point and Elsie Maynard, the scene is set for a daring escape, sparking a series of misunderstandings and reluctant marriage proposals. With our previous G&S co-productions praised for "raising laughs in all the right places" ★★★★ The Stage (The Pirates of Penzance 2021), "ending its 2022 Season in high style" ★★★★ The Guardian (HMS Pinafore 2022) and "perfectly polished Gilbert and Sullivan" ★★★★ The Times (Ruddigore 2023), The Yeomen of the Guard runs for this week only from 7 - 10 August. |
