CHRISTMAS ON THE WESTERN FRONT
When the First World War began in July of 1914, many believed it would be over before Christmas. Unfortunately, when December came, the war was still ongoing. Homesick, cold, and tired of fighting, thousands of soldiers across the Western Front agreed to an unofficial truce on Christmas Day.
It was a miraculous night of peace in the midst of the war. British and German soldiers mingled in no-man’s-land, singing carols and exchanging gifts. Though the war was destined to resume, memories would linger in the minds of all who participated of the night enemies set aside their weapons and came together in the spirit of peace and fellowship.
