Transport for London - New Year reasons to Tube it

Celebrating 160 years of the Tube Roundel

See how far we’ve come

Dominic, would you believe the Tube turned 160 this month? That’s right, 10 January marked the 160th anniversary of the first train operating on the Metropolitan Railway between Paddington and Farringdon. Since then, the Underground has grown to 272 stations on 11 lines and we’re planning on getting even bigger and better. Last year saw the Northern Line Extension and you can expect lots more improvements to come, including Bank Station completing its major upgrade in early 2023.

Check out our selection of free and low cost ways to celebrate some Tube history in January. Starting with a trip to the London Transport Museum, which is only a five minute walk from Covent Garden station. Here you’ll see just how much the Underground network has evolved over the years. Wherever the city takes you this January, whether it’s fulfilling your new year's resolution, exploring museums you’ve never been to, or getting over the January blues, you can enjoy unlimited trips all day long for £7.70 with our daily fare capping in Zones 1-2*. Kids under 11 can also travel for free.**

Hidden London Tours

The London Transport Museum also offers exclusive guided tours of the disused and historical parts of some of London’s busiest stations. From Piccadilly Circus’s secret passageways and lift shafts, to the old station corridors of Shepherd’s Bush, you’ll see why these tours have been voted Best Hidden Gem in the UK. Both of these tours let you take advantage of our great value fares too, as you can travel into Zone 1 from £2.60 off-peak.***

TfL Treasure Hunt

We’re celebrating our anniversary at the stations along the original route of the Metropolitan Railway -  London’s first Underground line - with a Tube themed treasure hunt on Saturday 21 January from 12-4pm. Your challenge is to visit each one of the original stations, using your sleuthing skills to solve clues about each station’s history while exploring the hidden wonders of the Underground. Our TfL Ambassadors will be on hand to allow participants through the gates at each station to avoid you having to pay along the route†. Solve all the clues to win a surprise gift. Happy hunting!
