Burgh House & Hampstead Museum - What's On at Burgh House

'Tis the season to be jolly!

And we have lots to be jolly about here at Burgh House! As the year draws to a close, we celebrate a fantastic programme of events and look forward to upcoming exhibitions, talks, concerts and recitals in 2017.

Finally, we will be closing for Christmas on Sunday 18th December and reopening on Wednesday 11th January. Have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year, and we shall see you soon!

Nursery Rhymes of London Town

Until Sunday 18 December

Nursery Rhymes of London Town, published in 1916, was the first literary success for the renowned writer Eleanor Farjeon. It led to a string of much-loved children's stories, works of poetry, plays, biographies and novels.  A second volume, More Nursery Rhymes of London Town, was published in 1917. The popularity of the books was due in no small part to the delightful illustrations by MacDonald Gill, best known for his humorous pictorial maps for the London Underground, including the famous Wonderground Map of London Town. To mark the centenaries of the two books, Burgh House & Hampstead Museum is hosting a special exhibition including first editions, art, photos and memorabilia from the estates of Eleanor Farjeon and MacDonald Gill.

From Lucas Cranach and Michelangelo to Francisco de Goya and Ingres, from Manet and Courbet to Helmut Newton and Robert Mapplethorpe, the bare human form has been a common subject for many artists and has been characterised in many different genres. But when is the representation of an unclothed, human body art? In this talk, we ponder the question that has occupied art historians and lovers for centuries and discuss a few of the key differences between nude and naked. Please note that this talk will include some explicit images. Tickets£8, including a glass of wine.

BOOK NOW FOR CHRISTMAS!
Directed by Damian Cruden, the Artistic Director of York Theatre Royal, with design by Joanna Scotcher, lighting by Richard G. Jones, music by Christopher Madin and sound by Craig Vear, Mike Kenny’s adaptation of The Railway Children was first produced by York Theatre Royal at the National Railway Museum, York, where it enjoyed two sell-out and critically acclaimed seasons in 2008 and 2009.  The production then opened at Waterloo Station in the former Eurostar terminal in July 2010, where it again played two critically acclaimed sell-out seasons and won the 2011 Olivier Award for Best Entertainment, before opening in Toronto in 2011 in a temporary theatre built at the base of CN Tower in Roundhouse Park.
The Railway Children tells the story of Bobbie, Peter and Phyllis, three children whose lives change dramatically when their father is mysteriously taken away.  They move from London to a cottage in rural Yorkshire with their mother, where they befriend the local railway porter, Perks, and embark on a magical journey of discovery, friendship and adventure.  But the mystery remains – where is Father, and is he ever coming back?
2016 marks the 110th anniversary of the publication of Edith Nesbit’s much loved classic children’s book The Railway Children, which has subsequently been adapted for the stage and screen, most famously in the 1970 film version directed by Lionel Jeffries and starring Jenny Agutter, Bernard Cribbins, Dinah Sheridan and Sally Thomsett.
The production is presented in London by Tristan Baker & Charlie Parsons for Runaway Entertainment, Oliver Royds for BOS Productions and Sue Scott Davison, in association with York Theatre Royal and the National Railway Museum.
