Burgh House & Hampstead Museum - What's On at Burgh House


We open again on Wednesday 11 January and we bring in the new year with a fantastic programme of talks, exhibitons and recitals.
Kicking off our programme of events is an exciting performance by Tim Pigott-Smith and Pamela Miles, featuring dramatic readings of a selection of prose and poetry (more details below).

Thursday 12 January, 7:30pm

Broadcaster, critic, and Burgh House interviewer, Piers Plowright, introduces his choice of Prose and Poetry, read by actors and Hampstead residents, Tim Pigott-Smith (fresh from his triumph in London and on Broadway as 'Charles III') and Pamela Miles. The programme will include poems by Thomas Hardy, Elizabeth Bishop, Stevie Smith and R.S Thomas, as well as dramatic extracts from Shakespeare's Macbeth, Pinter's The Birthday Party, and Chekhov's Uncle Vanya. Tickets are £12 (£10 FoBH and Under 26s) including a complimentary glass of wine.

Sunday 15 January, 11-12:30pm

Based on our current exhibition Retracing Ribero, Burgh House offers an engaging family art session where children and adults will play with the basic properties of colour.  This activity is suitable for all ages. Advance booking is recommended. £3 per child. Available here

London Natural History Society: Bird Flight

Wednesday 18 January, 7pm

Jeff Blincow takes a closer look at birds' reasons for flying, their diverse modes of flight and the experts in each field, he examines the evolution of flight and the avian world’s many different lifestyles, each of which requires specialist flight skills.

Lifelines with Rose Tremain CBE

Thursday 2 February, 7:30pm

Journalist and producer Piers Plowright chats with award-winning Author and Chancellor of the University of East Anglia Rose Tremain, whose novels and short stories have been published worldwide in 27 countries and have won many prizes, including the Sunday Express book of the Year Award; the Prix Femina Etranger, France; the Whitbread Novel of the Year Award and the Orange Prize for Fiction 2008 . Restoration was filmed in 1995 and a stage version was produced in 2009. Her latest novel is the acclaimed The Gustav Sonata which sees Rose writing at the height of her inimitable powers (Observer). Ishbel McWhirter: Scrutiny and Revelation A 90th Birthday Restrospective

Wednesday 11 January-Sunday 26 March

Ishbel McWhirter was born in 1927 and lives and works in Hampstead, London and Anglesey, North Wales. Showcasing works spanning from the 1940s to the present, this exhibition will be the first comprehensive survey of her work across seven decades. Coinciding with McWhirter’s 90thbirthday, it will celebrate her achievements as an artist. Charting her stylistic developments, personal relationships and singular sensitivities, it aims to communicate what makes McWhirter so distinctive and unique as a 20th century artist.  A simultaneous exhibition in the Peggy Jay Gallery, featuring large-scale paintings, including works for sale, will run from 18 January - 5 February.

Violin and Piano Recital

Friday 13 January, 7pm

Eleanor Wilkinson (violin) and Helen Crayford (piano) present a programme of music by Viennese composers including Kreisler, Kurt Roger and Erich Korngold in memory of Alma Mahler, and in aid of Help Musicians UK. The Viardot Trio

Sunday 15 January, 2pm

Contralto Cara Curran, cellist Madeleine Ridd and pianist Melanie Jones perform a selection of beautiful Romantic works for voice, cello and piano, as well as Beethoven's song cycle 'An Die Ferne Geliebte' and Bruch's 'Kol Nidrei'. Michael Simkins: An Actor's Life For Me

Have you ever wanted to know what it’s really like to be an actor? Perhaps you want to have a go yourself but don’t know where to start? Well, now’s your chance to find out. Local resident Michael Simkins has been there, done that, and got the T shirt. For over forty years he’s been a regular face on the west end stage and on your TV screens, and filming safety training videos on the correct use of fire extinguishers in the workplace. He even briefly achieved national fame, due to him constantly being mistaken in the street for Jeremy Vine during the 2015 series of "Strictly Come Dancing…"

Curated by Museum Intern Liberte Reilly as part of the series of exhibitions on the first-floor landing of the House, showcasing works from our collection stores. Destruction/ Construction looks at the edges of Hampstead beyond the pristine image. This display focuses on development and change in Hampstead. From its origins as a rural farm town to artistic retreat to its modern iteration as an urban community, Hampstead has been built, torn down, bombed, gentrified and is constantly evolving. Featuring photographs, water-colours and an oil pastel the exhibition covers a wide range of art styles, mediums and periods.  Come look at the ongoing processes of renovation and construction that make our Hampstead and shape its future.

Laura Beaumont: Bleed Between the Lines 3

Retracing Ribeiro

Until 19 March 2017

The Hampstead painter Lancelot Ribeiro was one of the most original of the Indian artists who settled in Britain in the post-war period. A new temporary exhibition of his works at Burgh House will launch a year-long Retracing Ribeiro programme of events, supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund and being celebrated as part of the 2017 UK-India Year of Culture, in partnership with The British Museum, V&A, Central Saint Martins and Camden Archives.
