'...Never has the role of London's Imperial War Museum been more important.'
Louisa Buck, The Art Newspaper

IWM's new Blavatnik Art, Film and Photography Galleries, now open at IWM London, highlight the complex tension between creativity and destruction, providing a vivid account of modern war.

With over 500 works on display, the galleries explore how artists, filmmakers and photographers shape how we think and feel about conflict. Specially chosen, these works reflect the seismic cultural, political and social impact of war across the twentieth and twenty-first centuries.

Discover more from IWM's art collection...
IWM's collections include around 16,000 works of art comprising paintings, sculpture, drawings, artist prints, photography, films and installations.

The artists who produced this work do not belong to a coherent movement. Instead, they are linked by a common endeavour: to create an artistic record of war and to reflect their responses to conflict as a part of human existence.

Here we explore ten compelling works by artists as eyewitnesses, commentators, participants and activists. Over various eras of conflict, their work offers new ways to perceive and interpret challenging subjects.

IWM holds one of the most significant collections of British art anywhere in the world – a collection which has shaped our understanding of war.

To coincide with the launch of the Blavatnik Art, Film and Photography Galleries, two new IWM publications, Visions of War and Gassedshine a light on some of our most iconic artworks.

Visions of War charts the manifold engagement between artists and conflict since 1914, while Gassed explores the history, composition and importance of John Singer Sargent's epic painting.
