Virtual Worlds: Corals at the Grant Museum

UCL Grant Museum of Zoology 15 August 2024 – 4 January 2025 Explore the Grant Museum of Zoology like never before in this virtual reality experience, in which you will be submerged into a 'flooded' museum transformed into a coral reef. Dive amongst healthy, degraded and restored coral in an installation built from audio recordings and underwater photography captured in the Pacific Ocean. Based on fieldwork by UCL marine biologists Ben Williams and Jason Lynch, and made in collaboration with Datascape Realities, Virtual Worlds: Corals at the Grant Museum reconstructs real-world coral habitats virtually in a location-specific experience. The VR activity is presented alongside the Grant Museum’s own collection of coral specimens, augmented reality digital models and 3D prints, and is supported by a public events programme. Recommended minimum age of 6+ but open to all. Younger children may need assistance from parents. Times and booking This event is free and no booking is required.

Exploring Coral Reefs: An evening of live performances and talks

25 October 2024 18:30 - 20:30 Join us for an evening of poetry, music and marine science exploring coral reefs, their extraordinary biodiversity, and the threats they face. Expect to be transported to an underwater world that you may have never considered before. Inspired by our ‘Virtual Worlds: Corals at the Grant Museum’ installation, the event brings together scientific and creative responses from a diverse panel of contributors, all linked to the VR experience. Family Event: Coral Creature Collage with Lucia

29 October 2024 13:00 - 16:00 Bring life through your own creativity. Join artist Lucia Vinti this half term to use drawing, collage, and green screen technology to restore a degraded coral reef back to a thriving habitat. This is an intergenerational workshop, suitable for all ages and abilities. Everyone is welcome. Family Event: Origami Reefs with Lizzie

14 December 2024 11:00 - 14:00 Learn about the many marine animals that can be found amongst coral reefs through the paper folding art of origami with Lizzie Burns. From different fish to turtles, crabs and squid, create your own folds to take home in these guided 50 minute sessions. We're reopening on 6 February We've missed you! After 10 months of improvement works, taking place behind our closed doors, we are thrilled to be reopening on Tuesday 6 February 2024. It’s taken six new show cases, 7,000 specimen moves, 200 conservation treatments, 350 new labels and many litres of paint. Come and visit the new displays next month, and find out how our collection continues to have huge impact on how we understand and learn from the natural world. New interpretation explores the Museum's role in conservation research, and highlights how the collections can inspire us to rebalance our relationship with nature. Tuesday 6 February (1-5pm) will be our first day of public opening, and our first Saturday opening will be 10 February (11am-5pm). Upcoming events in the Museum On Wednesday 7 February, we have a showcase evening presenting new collaborative arts and climate projects commissioned through UCL's Performing Planet Activism programme. On our opening Saturday, curatorial staff will be on hand throughout the Museum to welcome you, answer your questions and shed further light on the work we've been undertaking. In the February half-term, we are hosting a Family Event: Imaginary Habitats with Collage Club with artist Steph Hartman, exploring UCL's work with endangered habitats through the power of ripping, sticking and shape-making. And on Saturday 24 February, our Family Event: Wild, a Biodiversity Story delves into a web of ecosystems with an interactive and collaborative game inspired by UCL research. We hope you can join us!

Family Event: Animal Inventions

Saturday 28 January 10 - 11am: Family Members only, booking essential 11am - 1pm: All family visitors, no booking required Create an imaginary creature in this fun art workshop with artist Lucia Vinti. Responding to the Grant Museum's collection, you will randomly select a name and description for your animal, look at the many specimens displayed in the museum and create your new animal through drawing and collage. If you would like to beat the crowds, the first hour is open exclusively for our Family Members. The Museum will be open to Family Members from 10am, booking essential.

Family event: Finger-puppet fossils

Saturday 24 September 2022 10 - 11am: Family Members only, booking essential 11am - 1pm: All family visitors, no booking required Is it getting nippy outside? Wrap up and come to the Grant Museum of Zoology for a finger-warming puppet-making workshop led by arts educator Oliver Cloke. Be inspired by the hundreds of animals on display to create your very own finger puppet. We'll look carefully at different animal specimens and fossils from the collection, and then using craft materials create replica animals in puppet form. If you would like to beat the crowds, the first hour is open exclusively for our Family Members. The Museum will be open to Family Members from 10am, booking essential. This workshop is suitable for ages 6+ but young children will need adult help. We will have colouring sheets available for younger children.

Grant Museum of Zoology - 🔬 My Micrarium Masterpiece is back this month 🐞

 

Take a closer look at the Micrarium and design your own creepy-crawly Family Event: My Micrarium Masterpiece Saturday 30 July 2022 10-11am: Family Members only, booking essential. 11am-1pm: Free drop-in for all family visitors. Booking not required. In this playful workshop for younger visitors, children can take a closer look at the specimens in the Micrarium and use them as inspiration to design their own creepy-crawly, or recreate their favourite sample. This workshop, led by illustrator Lucia Vinti, will use translucent materials and a light box to recreate the appearance of the microscope slides. Children will create their artworks on acetate or tracing paper, using translucent marker pens and colourful cellophane to create their design. We will play with colours and layering, using the light box to see how colour and cellophane affect light. Visitors can take their artworks home, complete with display label and a name for their brand new specimen. If you would like to beat the crowds, the first hour is open exclusively for our Family Members. The Museum will be open to Family Members from 10am.
