Hi there,
Empty Reading Rooms, silent galleries and the King’s Library tower in darkness… without you the Library has been a very different place.
You’ll have heard that the government is now allowing us to welcome you back and we’d love to see you all back here, but it has to be safe for everyone.
This means from 22 July we’re intending to open some of our Reading Rooms in St Pancras and Boston Spa, initially just to Readers with an in-date Reader Pass.
If you're already a Reader, we'll be in touch next week with everything you need to know.
We’ll be opening with limited capacity in the Reading Rooms and reduced days and hours of opening while we test our processes, and Readers will need to pre-book their desk space and order collection items in advance. Please bear with us if you aren’t able to book right away or if your collection item isn’t available; we will increase capacity as it is safe to do so.
Reopening will be a gradual process.
In this first instance our public spaces, galleries, Members’ Room and Reader Registration won’t be open, so we won't be able to renew, replace or issue new Reader passes at the moment.
We will have a reduced catering offer, but plan to open all our toilets with enhanced cleaning.
We’re working really hard to open more of our spaces and services as quickly and as safely as possible, so we’ll let you know as soon as this changes.
Until then, we will continue to offer as many online services as we can so that the British Library remains open to everyone, wherever you are in the world.
We can't wait to see you again.
