The Exhibition

Exposing the future of manufacturing and distribution, Design Museum and theTechnology Strategy Board present the exhibition, The Future is Here, which explains how modern technology is altering the world. The part the consumer plays is ever-changing and as their role gets progressively interwoven in the design and manufacturing of goods, the future of industry is obscured once more. This exhibition explains the drivers behind modernisation and the economic benefits, as well as exploring the rise of hacktivists.

This will be the first factory of its kind as it will give guests the chance to find out how 3D printing works in a small workshop area and also witness live production. It will house exhibits such as a carbon loom invented by Lexus to weave car parts from strong carbon fibre, as well as an open-source approach to architecture: the Wikihouse. Meanwhile, Makie dolls embrace the concept of hacktivism by enabling the consumer to choose the body parts and customise the inside with LEDs, voicechips and more (see below).

More generally the exhibition will also explore social networking, crowd-funding, online marketplaces, nanotechnology and CNC routing and more; all set against the backdrop of the lowered barriers to entry. There will be a series of special events, inviting established designers to come in and use the factory, working on projects with the public. There will also be workshops clarifying the process of manufacturing biodegradable shoes and micro community manufacturing.
