Environment Agency: Thames Barrier saved London from flood chaos in tidal surge - London - News - London Evening Standard: "This apocalyptic picture shows the devastation London would have faced if the Thames Barrier hadn't protected the capital from the worst tidal surge in 60 years.
Vast swathes of London would have been submerged but for the defences, experts predicted.
Thousands of homes across the UK were hit by flooding last week when gales and high tides caused chaos in coastal areas.
The Environment Agency announced the Thames Barrier would close to protect the capital from flooding as sea levels rose to their highest since 1953, when floods left 307 people dead and 40,000 homeless.
