From the Curator
Summertime, and the screenings are easy; retrospectives and films from all sides...
As the days lengthen and the light grows, so we explore an entire body of work in depth, and focus on a life in art with our cross-London season celebrating the remarkable essay films, writings, artworks and all-round singularity of Jonathan Meades, alongside special guests and, of course, Meades himself.
From Eugenio Poglovsky's Mexican documentary work to Mark Boulos and his insurgent image-making, from Patrick Keiller's London to Grant Gee's Patience (After Sebald), it is a summer of film-makers in person that we offer you.
Whitechapel Gallery's moving image programme thrives on work that cannot easily be classified. Discoveries await. We look forward to seeing you here soon.

Jonathan Meades Retrospective
Writer, filmmaker, architectural critic and Britain’s greatest living television essayist Jonathan Meades (b. 1947) is the focus of our summer Retrospective.
Concrete and Victoria Sun 4 Jun 2017, 11.30am-6pm | £15/£12.50 concs Confronting the two great tropes of British architecture and featuring an introduction by the film-maker, here Meades reclaims the contested slabs of Brutalism and reminds us that the vestiges of Victoriana still define our present, featuring Christopher Biggins as Queen Victoria.
Dictators and Scotland Sun 11 Jun, 11.30am–6pm | £15/£12.50 concs In Joe Building (2006) and Jerry Building (1994) Meades probes the cultural imagination of totalitarianism, from strolling through the ruins of Nazi-built holiday resorts, to hectoring busts of Stalin in Soviet sculpture parks. This is followed by his compelling trilogy of Scottish films, Off-Kilter (2009). The event will feature an introduction by Jonathan Meads and a conversation between the film-maker, Chris Petit and Douglas Murphy.
West Thu 15 Jun 2017, 7pm | £9.50/£7.50 concs In his most autobiographical film, Meades revisits his childhood and accidental architectural education. This is coupled with a trip to Worcestershire, retracing the steps of Meades’ formal architectural education, Nikolaus Pevsner’s architectural guides. The film-maker will introduce this screening.
