What’s on for families at the British Museum


This October half-term enjoy drop-in activities inspired by the BP exhibition Ming: 50 years that changed China or follow a trail across 12 museums to celebrate the film Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb. See special exhibitions on mummies andGermany – under 16s go free to all exhibitions and kids also eat free in our Gallery Café! Plus, check out fantastic new activities for under 5s from November.

Children go free to all of the Museum’s special exhibitions.
Family guides are also available, and are full of fun ways to explore the exhibitions.
Explore a golden age in China’s history when the Ming dynasty emperors sent ships as far as India, Arabia and East Africa. Many of the spectacular objects on display have only been excavated in the past ten years and have never been seen outside China.

This exhibition will bring you face to face with eight mummies from ancient Egypt and Sudan. See them as never before, using hands-on technology to unlock hidden secrets.

The British Museum plays host to Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb, in cinemas December 2014. To celebrate the new release, you can take part in the Night at the Museum Mile trail across 12 museums over half-term (17–31 October). The more museums you visit, the more chances you have to win amazing prizes, including a trip to LA!

Under 5s and their parents and careers can explore the themes of the exhibition Ancient lives, new discoveries together through playful and multisensory activities.

Join us for a morning of creative and messy activity exploring the colours, shapes and patterns of ancient Egypt. Investigate a range of art materials and create your own masterpiece to take home.

As part of the British Museum programme for communities, supplementary school students have created performances and art installations based on objects on display in the Roman, Ancient Iran and Clocks and Watches galleries.
Families are invited to view the art display, dance and storytelling performances in the galleries and take part in an arts workshop in the Great Court, all designed and created by young people. Learn about their explorations and make new discoveries of your own!
Enjoy a family-friendly visit to the British Museum this half-term. The Ford Centre facilities can be used free of charge by families, kids eat free in the Gallery Café and our galleries and exhibitions are accessible with buggies.
We have a huge range of free trails and backpacks to help you explore the galleries together. Visit the Families Desk in the Great Court to pick one up at the start of your visit.
