Resplendent in lime green, the Queen was greeted by thousands of cheering well-wishers as she started a day of events to mark her 90th birthday.
The most devoted royalist camped out on the streets overnight and by mid-morning the pavements were packed with excited schoolchildren, adults in fancy dress and a handful of well-behaved dogs, all hoping to catch a glimpse of Her Majesty.
Her arrival was marked by a rendition of Happy Birthday by the Band of the Coldstream Guards.
The milestone birthday will be marked with a number of events across the county, starting with the Queen's walkabout through Windsor. Later, the Monarch will be honoured by close friends and family at a private black tie party hosted by Prince Charles.
Prime Minister David Cameron has led the tributes to the 'rock of our nation' who he said 'has lived through some extraordinary times'.
