What's that sprouting in the Terrace Rooms?

Our hotly anticipated new exhibition Mushrooms: The Art, Design and Future of Fungi opens next week, inviting you to ponder the seemingly humble, but actually remarkable, mushroom as a topic of fascination for artists, designers and musicians.

This free exhibition reveals an organism with a colourful cultural legacy that has evoked poetic and psychedelic wonder, plus the potential for us to reimagine our relationship to the planet.

The exhibition's official beauty and wellness partner Origins are offering free mushroom-powered facials (scroll down to book) and you can explore their mushroom-powered skincare line in the Mushrooms Shop.

Exhibition Highlights

Personal projects from mushroom fanatics include Cy Twombly’s mushroom collage portfolio, Beatrix Potter’s scientific water colours that helped progress the study of fungi, and John Cage’s rare book of mushroom recipes, observations and illustrations. There’s also work from contemporary artists including Haroon MirzaHannah Collins and Adham Faramawy.

You can also explore experiments in design, architecture and textiles that utilise mushrooms in creative new ways, such as Jae Rhim Lee’s Infinity Burial Suit, proposing a more ecological approach to the funeral industry.
