Buses and roads

Temporary bus capacity limits have increased. Double-decker buses carry up to 30 passengers, while single-deckers can carry either 11 to 14 passengers depending on their size. Signage on buses clearly mark these new passenger limits, and bus drivers can allow more passengers on board if they are travelling in household groups. Check for more information relating to your route.

Limited Night Bus services are running and due to the following works, some buses may be diverted or stop short of their normal destination. Make sure you check before you travel.

Hammersmith Bridge - Emergency closure. Following expert technical advice, Hammersmith & Fulham Council has taken the decision to close the bridge to all traffic – including pedestrians and cyclists – until we can be assured it is safe. While, it’s already closed to general traffic and buses and has been for a while, it will now be closed to people walking and cycling.

Engineers are on site assessing the damage, which may have been caused by the recent extreme weather, and we continue to work with Hammersmith & Fulham and Richmond upon Thames councils on this project. Please plan ahead and check before you travel. For the latest information please visit status updates.

Knightsbridge – From Monday 17 August until early November there will be lane restrictions and temporary lights on the A4, Knightsbridge at the junctions with Sloane Street and Brompton Road. These are for essential works carried out by Cadent Gas to replace a main. Delays are expected, please plan ahead and check before you travel, for the latest information please visit status updates.

Bexley - From Monday 17 August until Saturday 29 August there will be a series of overnight directional closures of the A20 Sidcup Road and Sidcup Bypass whilst we carry out essential maintenance. Works will take place Monday to Friday from 22:00 until 05:00, restrictions on Friday nights will be removed by 05:00 on Saturday morning. Diversion routes will be in place, please plan ahead and check before you travel, for the latest information please visit status updates.

A200 near Bermondsey – Until 3 September there will be a series of overnight directional closures to resurface the carriageway on Tower Bridge Road near Tooley Street, Tooley Street, Jamaica Road, and at the West Lane and Southwark Park Road junction. Works will take place from 21:00 until 05:00. This is for Cycleway 4 and will be completed in stages to minimise impacts. Buses will be on diversion and signed diversions will be in place for general traffic. Please plan ahead and check before you travel, for the latest information please visit status updates.

Vauxhall Bridge  - Until late November 2020, Vauxhall Bridge will be closed to general traffic in both directions, this is due to safety critical repair works. Currently access will be maintained, in both directions, for people walking and cycling, and for southbound buses, coaches, and taxis. Buses and coaches northbound towards Victoria will be on diversion via Lambeth Bridge and Millbank. All other vehicles will be on diversion, and if using the signed diversion route will be exempt from the Congestion Charge and Ultra Low Emission Zone charges. Some evening full closures for all of the bridge will be required.

If your journey is through the area but not stopping locally, please consider re-routing. Chelsea Bridge, Lambeth Bridge and surrounding roads are also expected to be very busy. Find out more.

Kingston - From 6 July until 14 August there will be a series of overnight lane restrictions on the A3 between Hook Underpass and the Kingston Bypass. Works will take place Monday to Friday from 22:00 until 05:00. This is due to essential maintenance work. Please plan ahead and check before you travel, for the latest information please visit status updates.

Shoreditch - Until 30 September 2020, Shoreditch High Street will have a contra-flow reducing the width of the carriageway in both directions between Holywell Lane and New Yards Inn. This is due to Shoreditch Village development works.

London Bridge - Until 31 October 2020, London Bridge is closed to general traffic (except buses, licensed taxis, motorcyclists and cyclists). Diversions are in place and there are changes to the junction either side of the bridge. Please take extra care when driving while all users, including pedestrians, get used to the new layout.

Drivers using Blackfriars Bridge or Tower Bridge should expect queues while crossing the river. Travel outside of peak times and use alternative river crossings including Westminster and Lambeth bridges where possible for an easier journey. This is for essential maintenance works being carried out by the City of London Corporation. Please visit our London Bridge works page for more information.
