Last chance to see Quentin Blake’s Inside Stories at the House of Illustration

There are just three weeks left to see Quentin Blake’s inaugural exhibition at the House of Illustration - Inside Stories finishes on 2nd November 2014

The House of Illustration has been home to a landmark show by Quentin Blake, one of the UK’s most important and best-loved illustrators.

Inside Stories gives a unique insight into the origins of some of Quentin Blake’s most characteristic and popular creations, from his illustrations of Roald Dahl’s The Twits andDanny Champion of the World to his own Clown, The Boy in the Dress by David Walliams and illustrations of books by John Yeoman, Russell Hoban and Michael Rosen.

Inside Stories brings together first roughs and storyboards, many never shown before, with finished art work to demonstrate how ideas evolved, often in close collaboration with the authors. It shows how Quentin Blake brings to bear a wide range of different techniques and media including inks, watercolours and pastels applied with a variety of touch, in response to the particular mood of a book and the nature of its characters, to create his distinctive and unforgettable illustrations.

From 18th October, visitors will also be able to see Paddington: Illustrated & Animated, an exhibition which will explore the different approaches of multiple illustrators and animators to one of the most enduring characters in British children’s literature, Michael Bond’s much-loved bear.

Since Michael Bond completed the first Paddington Book in 1958, A Bear Called Paddington, six illustrators have worked to bring Paddington to life. The exhibition will show the approaches of Peggy Fortnum, Fred Banbery, Ivor Wood, David McKee, John Lobban and R.W. Alley and reveal the contrasting styles of illustrators working at different times to changing briefs. The exhibition will also feature the model head created by animators at Oscar-winning visual effects studio Framestore and used in the new Paddington movie.
