Transport for London - Important travel information for the festive period

Advice for getting around London during the festive period. This email is slightly longer than usual as it provides information through to Sunday 3 January. We also cover key National Rail service changes, including those affecting airports. Please look out for our update next week, which will include further road information.

Festive services

The main changes to our services on the key days are outlined below. For a one page visual summary of the services running each day, please click here

Christmas Eve, Thursday 24 December - Most Tube and rail services will run normally until around early evening. Buses and the DLR will operate a Saturday service. Last trains will be earlier than usual and most buses will run until just after midnight.

Christmas Day, Friday 25 December - There will be no service on the entire TfL network.

Boxing Day, Saturday 26 December - A Sunday service will operate on most of the network. There will be no service on London Overground, TfL Rail or the Waterloo & City line.

Bank Holiday, Monday 28 December - A Saturday service will operate on most of the network. TfL Rail will run a reduced service.

New Year’s Eve, Thursday 31 December - Free travel will be provided on all of our services from 23:45 until 04:30, or last service. Buses run throughout the night; please visit our website for details on other services.

From around 14:00, Waterloo, Westminster and Jubilee Bridges, and roads in central London will start to close to prepare for the ticketed fireworks event. Buses will gradually be withdrawn. All bridge and road closures will be in place from 20:00 and most will re-open at 06:00 on Friday 1 January, or when it is safe to do so. Central London road closures will remain until 18:00 to facilitate the New Year’s Day Parade.

New Year’s Day, Friday 1 January - A special service will operate on most of the network. Buses will run a Sunday service.

Public transport and road users
As this is a quieter time of year, we are taking the opportunity to carry out improvements and maintenance. Even on Christmas Day, when the entire public transport network is closed, there will be over 1,000 of our team working.





London Underground


We are undertaking a comprehensive improvement programme across London’s transport network, including the modernisation of the Tube.

Central line
Holland Park Tube station will be closed from Saturday 2 January until early August 2016.

Circle line
From Saturday 26 to Wednesday 30 December, there will be no service between Hammersmith and Tower Hill via King’s Cross St. Pancras. This is to allow us to carry out track and drainage replacement work in the King’s Cross area and Crossrail work between Farringdon and Liverpool Street.

From Saturday 2 to Sunday 3 January, trains will not run between Baker Street and Hammersmith/High Street Kensington. This is due to track replacement work at Paddington and line improvement work at Hammersmith.

District line
On Saturday 2 January, there will be no service between Earl’s Court and Kensington (Olympia). Also, on Saturday 2 and Sunday 3 January, trains will also not run between Edgware Road and High Street Kensington, due to track replacement work at Paddington. On Sunday 3 January, there is also no service between Turnham Green and Richmond due to line improvement work.

Hammersmith & City line
From Saturday 26 to Wednesday 30 December, trains will not run between Hammersmith and Aldgate East, while we carry out track and drainage replacement work in the King’s Cross area and Crossrail work between Farringdon and Liverpool Street.

From Saturday 2 to Sunday 3 January, there will be no service between Baker Street and Hammersmith. This is due to track replacement work at Paddington and line improvement work at Hammersmith.

Metropolitan line
From Saturday 26 to Wednesday 30 December, there will be no service between Baker Street and Aldgate. This is to allow us to carry out track and drainage replacement work in the King’s Cross area and Crossrail work between Farringdon and Liverpool Street.

London Overground


During the festive period, there will be a number of changes to London Overground services. This is due to preparatory work for electrification, Network Rail track work and Crossrail work at Whitechapel.

From Sunday 27 until Sunday 3 January, trains will not run between Richmond and Willesden Junction.

On Sunday 27 and Monday 28 December, there will be no service between the following stations:
 Gospel Oak and Barking
 Highbury & Islington and Shadwell
 Sydenham and Crystal Palace
 Romford and Upminster
 
From Friday 1 until Sunday 3 January, trains will not run between Romford and Upminster.

On Sunday 3 January, there will also be no service between the following stations:
 Wandsworth Road and Clapham Junction until 10:00
 Gospel Oak and Stratford after 22:00
 
There will be rail replacement buses operating during some of the closures.

TfL Rail


During the festive period, there will be planned works and service changes to TfL Rail services. This is while Network Rail carry out signalling, track and station improvement work in preparation for Crossrail.

On Sunday 27 and Monday 28 December, there will be no service between Ilford and Shenfield. Rail replacement buses will operate between Ilford and Shenfield, calling at all stops.

From Friday 1 to Sunday 3 January, trains will not run between Seven Kings and Shenfield. Replacement buses will operate between Ilford and Shenfield, calling at all stops.

Buses


Bus users may be affected by the following during this festive period. While we will try to maintain a good service, buses may be delayed or stop short of their normal destination:

Elephant & Castle - From Saturday 19 December until Sunday 3 January, there will be lane closures on Newington Causeway and the Elephant & Castle Link Road. This is due to junction improvement works. For more information, please visit tfl.gov.uk/elephant

Old Street - From Saturday 19 December until Thursday 24 December, lane closures will be in place at the junction of Old Street and Great Eastern Street, due to Cycle Superhighway works. For more information, please visit tfl.gov.uk/cs1

Swiss Cottage - From Saturday 26 December until Thursday 31 December, Avenue Road will have lane closures due to utility works.

Aldgate East and Bow - From Wednesday 23 December until Sunday 3 January, lane closures will be in place on Whitechapel Road and Mile End Road. There will be no right turn from Whitechapel High Street onto Commercial Street. This is due to Cycle Superhighway 2 works. For more information, please visit tfl.gov.uk/cs2

Roads


The Congestion Charge will be suspended for a week, from Friday 25 December until Friday 1 January inclusive. The daily charge will apply again from Monday 4 January.

Road users may be affected by the following during this festive period:

Elephant & Castle - From Saturday 19 December until Sunday 3 January, there will be lane closures on Newington Causeway and the Elephant & Castle Link Road. This is due to junction improvement works. For more information, please visit tfl.gov.uk/elephant

Santander Cycles


A number of docking stations are not available due to New Year celebrations and London’s annual New Year’s Day Parade. For more information, please visit tfl.gov.uk/festive





National Rail London Terminals


There are some planned works and service changes on National Rail services, particularly on Christmas Eve and Boxing Day. Network Rail planned works will affect journeys to Heathrow, Gatwick and Stansted airports during the festive period. For more information, please check nationalrail.co.uk/christmas

Lumiere light festival in January
From Thursday 14 until Sunday 17 January, stations and roads in the West End and King’s Cross areas will be busier than usual each evening. This is due to the Lumiere light festival. For more information, visit tfl.gov.uk/lumiere
