The 21st Serpentine Pavilion, Black Chapel, designed by Chicago-based artist Theaster Gates is now open. Conceived as a space for gathering, meditation and participation, with an emphasis on sacred music, Black Chapel will become a platform for Serpentine’s live programme from 11 June to 15 October throughout the summer and beyond and offer reflection, connection and joy.The Serpentine Pavilion has evolved from its first iteration in 2000, by Zaha Hadid, into a highly-anticipated showcase of emerging and established talents.

Wonder in Sam Beste of The Vernon Spring while he plays piano in response to the 2022 Serpentine Pavilion.

Black Chapel by Theaster Gates transforms into an open studio as Beste performs experimental and contemplative compositions drawing on existing work as well as improvisations. Each reflective reverberation takes advantage of the Pavilion’s acoustics for those curious to listen to his unique minimalist expressions.
