Help us remember
War memorials are an important part of our cultural heritage.

Not only do they preserve the names of those lost in war, they also reflect the changing face of commemoration.

With no central organisation, communities have been able to choose their own design and wording. As a result, every war memorial presents a unique historical record. They are a document of artistic, social, military and international history.

IWM’s War Memorials Register is a comprehensive national register of over 90,000 UK war memorials and the names of the individuals they commemorate.

Our network of volunteers help keep the register up to date by researching, visiting and photographing memorials around the country.

David Austin, an IWM volunteer, has spent 4 years surveying every war memorial in Warwickshire. This is a huge task under any circumstances, but David has done it all on his bicycle, cycling 5,000 miles and surveying 940 memorials.

Our volunteers do extraordinary things. Their efforts help ensure that future generations can continue to value and remember the people, places and events that war memorials commemorate.

If you would like to get involved by making a valuable contribution, please click here to send us war memorial information or photographs of your local war memorials. Please confirm that you took any photographs, that you consent for reuse under IWM’s non-commercial license, and how you wish to be credited.

You can also join IWM as a member. Support from our members helps IWM protect our world-leading collections and foster initiatives including the War Memorials Register. As a thank you for joining, you'll enjoy free entry to HMS Belfast, IWM Duxford, Churchill War Rooms plus much more.
