IWM’s new Blavatnik Art, Film and Photography Galleries are now open
'The space offered to us by IWM to pause and reflect seems not just topical but essential.' - The Guardian

Featuring over 500 artworks, the enthralling new Blavatnik Art, Film and Photography Galleries display our diverse art collection alongside our extensive, era-defining film and photography collections for the first time.

Showcasing the experiences and innovations of artists, filmmakers and photographers, these galleries explore the complex tension which exists between creativity and destruction.

Discover how visual practitioners are also powerful narrators who shape how we think and feel about conflict, and the role of art, film and photography in influencing public opinion.

Free entry. Find out more and plan your visit today.

Get up close to John Singer Sargent’s monumental six-metre-long painting Gassed. A favourite among IWM visitors, the painting has undergone significant conservation work to revitalise and transform your viewing experience.

Originally commissioned by the government’s British War Memorials Committee, Gassed is the largest painting in IWM's collection. Painted in 1919, the work endures as a lasting symbol of modern art in public service.

Discover the work of Olive Edis – one of the first women in Britain to build a career in freelance photography. In 1918, Edis was commissioned by IWM to photograph women serving in France.

More serious and intimate than earlier commissions, Edis' images show women attached to the armed forces in a variety of roles including nursing, administration, engine repair and everything in between.
