Discover the UK’s biggest ever Gothic exhibition.

Two hundred rare objects trace the history of the Gothic movement over 250 years, exploring our fascination with the mysterious and the macabre.

From Mary Shelley and  Bram Stoker  to Stanley Kubrick and  Alexander McQueen, via  posters, books, films and even a vampire-slaying kit, experience the dark shadow that the Gothic imagination has cast across our daily lives.

Accompanying the exhibition are events with writers Sarah Waters, Kate Mosse, comedian Stewart Lee, actor Reece Sheersmith, musician Brian May and more.

Crafted from the words of Dylan Thomas, Bob Kingdom's electrifying performance as the poet has been acclaimed around the world. This 'thrilling lyrical journey' (the Guardian) was directed by Anthony Hopkins and is now presented at the Library to mark the centenary of Dylan Thomas' birth.

Ida Barr's Great War Music Hall

Music hall star turned hip-hop artiste Ida Barr (the creation of former British Library Artist in Residence Christopher Green) will have you singing along at this event celebrating the height of the British Music Hall during WWI.

This event accompanies our free exhibition Enduring War: Grief, Grit and Humour - Open until 12 October 2014.

Salman Rushdie: The PEN Pinter Prize 2014

This year’s PEN Pinter Prize will be awarded to Salman Rushdie. He will be presented with the prize and deliver an address at this event recognising writers who, in the words of Harold Pinter, cast an ‘unflinching, unswerving gaze upon the world, and shows a ‘fierce intellectual determination … to define the real truth of our lives and our societies’.
