Behind the scenes at the Museum Depot, Acton
Saturday 13 & Sunday 14 September, 11.00 - 17.00
The Museum's Depot in Acton, West London will open for a weekend of activities focusing on the role of London's transport in the First World War. A highlight of the Open Weekend will be the appearance of the Museum's 1914 B-type bus No. 2737 in khaki wartime 'Battle Bus' livery. Visitors will be able to attend talks about its recent restoration, transformation and history. Other attractions include family fun activities, stalls, the Acton Miniature Railway and a bouncy bus.

Talk: Designing the New RoutemasterTalk and book launch: Ole Bill - London Buses and the First World War

The New Routemaster is London's first bespoke bus since the original Routemaster was launched to the public in 1954. Stuart Wood, Head of Innovation at Heatherwick Studio led the team that designed the bus and his talk will reveal the thinking behind the design.

Thursday 11 September, 18.30
A new book Ole Bill - London Buses and the First World War has been written by Dr William D Ward using extensive research and a detailed study of first-hand accounts preserved in official War Diaries. Dr Ward will give an illustrated talk about the story of B43 "Ole Bill" and the other London buses that went to war and will sign copies of his book in the Museum's Cubic Theatre. Tickets include free entry to the Museum from 16.00 to see the "Ole Bill" bus and the Museum's recently converted "Battle Bus".

Talk: The Only Road for an Englishman: First World War Propaganda PostersDestination Western Front: "Battle Bus" on tour


Tuesday 2 September, 18.30
David Bownes (Assistant Director of Collections, National Army Museum) will explore the use of posters for propaganda during the First World War. The talk will be held at the Museum and tickets include admission to the Museum within one month of the event, giving visitors the chance to see the new poster parade featuring propaganda posters that were displayed on the London Underground during the First World War. The talk will be followed by a Q&A session.

From Monday 8 September
The Museum's recently restored B-type bus No. 2737 will be transformed into wartime appearance between 8 and 11 September. Stripped of its red London paintwork and with boarded up windows it will then appear in Covent Garden Piazza prior to its Grand Depart for France. There will also be an opportunity to see it at the Acton Depot on 13 and 14 September before it heads off for France via Folkestone on 18 September.
