Martin Norton Lecture - A Rothschild Renaissance
Wednesday 15 June | 6.30-7.30pm

Join Dr Dora Thornton at the Jewish Museum as she discusses the Renaissance treasures collected by Baron Ferdinand Rothschild MP.

The Waddesdon Bequest is the name given by Baron Ferdinand to a collection of medieval and renaissance treasures which he bequeathed to the British Museum at his death in 1898.

As a collection, the Bequest presents a snapshot in the self-fashioning of a new European dynasty. It consists of exceptionally important medieval and Renaissance pieces, as well as a number of 19th-century fakes.

The rise of the Rothschilds from the Frankfurt Jewish quarter to become bankers to the world within two generations is one of the great rags to riches stories in Europe.

Dr Thornton will discuss this 'Rothschild Renaissance' as well as the making and meaning of the collection at the British Museum and how she reinterpreted it for the new gallery in the light of new research.
