Kennington Talkies presents The Thin Man Goes Home (1944) Sun 2 Dec 2018 @ 14:30 For the fifth Thin Man film, the director is Richard Thorpe, as W. S. Van Dyke had died in 1943, and with a script by Robert Riskin and Dwight Taylor from a story by Riskin and Harry Kurnitz, who had scripted the previous film. Nick and Nora visit Sycamore Springs, Nick’s hometown, to visit his parents, played by Lucile Watson and Harry Davenport. When an aircraft factory employee seeks out Nick and is shot dead before he can reveal anything, Nick is on the case… Full supporting programme. Admission £6. Purchase Tickets Kennington Bioscope presents The Virgin of Stamboul (1920) and Maria Marten (1928) Wed 5 Dec 2018 @ 19:30 The main feature is The Virgin of Stamboul (1920), directed by Tod Browning, and starring Priscilla Dean, Wheeler Oakman and Wallace Beery. Achmet Bey (Beery), a Turkish chieftain, catches one of his many wives in adultery and murders her lover. Throwing aside the cuckolding wife, he abducts an innocent girl (Dean) to his harem. However, a brave American who loves her (Oakman) comes to her rescue. The 35mm print from the BFI will be introduced by Kevin Brownlow. In the first half of the programme we will show a lost British feature, Maria Marten(1928), courtesy of the Pat Moules Collection. This is one of the five film versions of the Red Barn Murders of the 1820s, and is directed by Walter West and stars Trilby Clark, Warwick Ward and Dora Barton. Magnificent Obsessions: The Films of Ross Hunter presents Thoroughly Modern Millie (1967) Thu 6 Dec 2018 @ 19:30 Julie Andrews is Millie Dillmount, our delightfully naïve and headstrong heroine, who is determined to be as modern as possible, setting her sights on being a career woman in order to land the boss. This would be fairly straightforward if complications didn’t arise, like Mrs. Meers (Beatrice Lillie) the woman who runs her bordering house, drugging young women and shipping them off into slavery. A big-budget musical farce, with Mary Tyler Moore as her best friend, James Fox as her love interest and John Gavin for a bit of eye-candy, Millie is still a delight today, and Julie Andrews is a vision on screen.
