Stunning 360-degree view that shows London as you’ve never seen it before

Battersea Power Station’s chimneys will soon offer you the chance to view the city from above

Battersea Power Station’s chimneys are an iconic feature of the London skyline, looming over the Thames for nearly a century now.

But as of next year you’ll be able to see them and the rest of London from a completely unique vantage point that gives the London Eye a run for its money.

As part of the new development at the Grade II listed former power plant, the North West chimney is set to be converted into a state of the art ‘Chimney Lift’ viewing platform, offering unrivalled 360-degree views of the capital as well as the historic landmark itself.

In the build up to the opening of the new attraction, Battersea Power Station have released a new interactive and immersive CGI bubble image of the one of a kind Chimney Lift experience, previewing the incredible views it will offer.

Travelling 109 metres into the sky above London, the specially made glass Chimney Lift will carry 30 passengers at a time to the very top of the famous stack and will be available both to the public and for private hire.

The Chimney Lift will be part of a wider experience with an exhibition celebrating the station’s history in Turbine Hall A climaxing with the Chimney Lift.

Sam Cotton, Head of Leasing at Battersea Power Station Development Company said: “This year is going to be the most exciting yet in the transformation of Battersea Power Station.

“The first ride in the Chimney Lift will be an extremely special moment for everyone involved in the project and one we’re all looking forward to.”

Did you know?

-        Original proposals for the chimneys featured a square design rather than circular.

-        Battersea Power Station was built in two stages and only started with two chimneys in 1935, before getting the additional two chimneys 20 years later in 1955.

-        In 1940, RAF pilots use the plumes of white vapour from the chimneys to guide them home in the mist. The Luftwaffe also used the plumes for navigation, which might explain why the Power Station avoided extensive bombing during World War II.

-        In 1977, an inflatable pink pig floating between the two southern chimneys appeared on the front cover of Pink Floyd’s album, Animals. The inflatable pig was tethered to one of the southern chimneys but lost its moorings and rose to the flight path of Heathrow Airport. Police helicopters tracked its course until it finally landed off the coast of Kent.

-        The Battersea Power Station Chimney Lift will be run by global events and entertainment leader IMG. Running more than 800 events around the world, IMG produces and operates some of the UK’s most popular events including Hyde Park's Winter Wonderland, the Natural History Museum Ice Rink, Hampton Court Palace Festival, The Big Feastival and Taste of London
