Weekend travel information

If you need to travel this weekend, there are planned works on certain sections of the network that may affect your journey.

Our transport network has never been cleaner. Since September, Imperial College London has run monthly tests for coronavirus on the transport network and found no trace. You can read their recently published report.

Air continuously flows through all our trains, trams and buses. For example, on average, air in a Tube train changes every few minutes. Buses are fitted with air extraction and ventilation systems and we also leave windows open throughout the passenger area to keep a flow of fresh air.

Please continue to walk or cycle part of your journey where possible. If using public transport, travel during quieter times if you can. This will make social distancing easier. The quieter times to travel are:

  • Between 08:15 and 16:00 and after 17:30 on weekdays
  • Before noon and after 18:00 on weekends

Our TfL Go app can help you plan your journey and show the quieter times to travel.

You must continue to wear a face covering over your nose and mouth at all times when on the transport network, unless exempt. The overwhelming majority of people are complying with this requirement, and the British Transport Police, the Metropolitan Police and our own officers are on the network to check compliance. Fines of up to £6,400 exist for anyone who does not comply.

Over 134,000 customers have been stopped by TfL enforcement officers to put on masks before boarding trains. Over 9,000 people were prevented from boarding, while more than 2,000 were ejected from the service. We have issued 1,991 Fixed Penalty Notices.

Please also wash or sanitise hands before and after travel.

Some Tube and DLR stations are temporarily not accepting cash at ticket machines and only accept card payments.

If you need to use cash to top up or buy a ticket, you can do so at one of nearly 4,000 Oyster ticket stops. You can also top up using our free payments app and  register your card online to set up auto-top-up. The list of stations accepting cash can be found on our safer travel guidance page under the 'Use contactless or Oyster' heading.

London Underground

Most Tube services run until approximately 01:00 and our Night Bus services continue to operate. Taxi and private hire services are also available. Night Tube and Night Overground services are not operating.

Please check before you travel and plan your journey ahead of time.

National Rail services

On Friday 23, Saturday 24 and Sunday 25 April, there will be no National Rail services from King’s Cross. On Saturday and Sunday only there will also be no National Rail services from Moorgate, or between St Pancras and Potters Bar/Stevenage.

Customers travelling to Peterborough or Cambridge should use Thameslink from St Pancras, changing for replacement buses where necessary.

Customers travelling north of Peterborough should use Thameslink to Bedford and change for replacement buses from there. Customers for Great Northern stations towards Stevenage or Hertford North should use the Piccadilly line and take replacement buses from Cockfosters to Potters Bar or from Bounds Green to Gordon Hill.

Signalling upgrade

We are modernising the Circle, District, Hammersmith & City and Metropolitan lines and work starts this weekend between Monument and Sloane Square. Once the upgrade is done, we’ll be able to run trains more frequently and reliably. This will mean faster journeys, reduced waiting times and fewer delays thanks to modern computerised signalling systems.

The phase follows the introduction of new signalling last month between Euston Square, Stepney Green and Monument, in addition to the sections that have already been upgraded on other parts of the District, Circle, Hammersmith & City and Metropolitan lines.

Significant preparation has gone into making sure this complex operation goes smoothly, but there may be some minor delays on the affected lines as the new system comes into operation. There may also be some cancellations and larger gaps between trains.

Be sure to allow more time for your journey, check before you travel, and whenever possible, travel at quieter times.

You can also check our planned works page for more details.

Some bus routes in west and south west London and parts of Surrey are likely to be severely disrupted.

Services will return to normal at 06:00 the following mornings.

If you need to travel during this period, check before you travel
