Burgh House - December Exhibitions and Events

December at Burgh House

Is it that time of year already!? Hampstead is certainly looking very festive now, and we've gone all out and decked the halls and added some sparkle outside. We have a fantastic festive exhibition in our Christopher Wade Room - Winter in London with John Burningham. You can find more information about this below, but I would add that it really is worth a visit; some of the pieces are unpublished works and it's a priviledge to see them.

In other news, today (Sunday 5th December) is International Volunteer Day, so the team at Burgh House would like to say an extra big thank you to all of our volunteers who help us to open the House to our visitors - we're really grateful!

If you are studying history, art, museum studies or similar and would like some experience, please do let us know if you would be interested in volunteering too. Or, if you live locally and enjoy getting to know other locals, having a chat and helping to make the House as accessible as possible, then please do also get in touch!

Winter in London with John Burningham
25th November - 9th January

This exhibition presents a festive selection of original artworks by the beloved and much loved illustrator, author and Hampstead resident, John Burningham (1936-2019), including works from Trubloff - The Mouse who wanted to play the Balalaika and Harvey Slumfenburger's Christmas Present. This exhibition is a precursor to a retrospective of Burningham's work to be held at Burgh House later in January 2022.
Christmas Shopping Day

Join us in our stunning Music Room on Wednesday, 15th January for a special Christmas shopping event. We will have a brilliant selection of unique, quirky and locally sourced items, along with an eclectic selection of books, wrapping paper and Christmas cards.

There will be perfect stocking fillers, such as candles, locally made soaps, and dinner party games from the School of Life. There will also be a brilliant selection of books, from walking guides to London and Hampstead, to fiction and books written by authors who have given talks at Burgh House.

It's open to all and we look forward to seeing you there!

Come hither, come hither, come hither
Peggy Jay Gallery
1st December - 19th December

Come hither, come hither, come hither is an exhibition of new works by two local, emerging female artists, Rebecca Hardaker and Emily Lazerwitz. Working with different mediums both artists have created bodies of work which explore themes of female spaces and the home.

Hardaker draws upon surrealist narratives using motifs from within her own home. She explores the intersection of painting and drawing through the use of colour and pastels.

Lazerwitz references American quilting and African textiles by making tapestries through traditions rug making techniques. Lazerwitz explores colour and design in a playful and rhythmic way in these new works, which differ from much of practice which is more methodical and planned.

All exhibited works are for sale and would make unique Christmas presents!
