Transport for London - Weekend travel information

Weekend travel information

Dear Mr Grantham,

If you are out and about this weekend, please note that there are planned works taking place on certain parts of the network. There will also be some future closures that may affect your journey over the festive period and in the New Year. You can find more details below.

In line with Government regulations on the wearing of face coverings on public transport from Tuesday 30 November, we are reminding all customers travelling on the TfL transport network that they must wear face coverings for the duration of their journeys or risk being fined, unless they are exempt

Additionally, face coverings should be worn by everyone in taxi and private hire vehicles for the duration of their journey. Exemptions include people who have trouble breathing, children and anyone who finds it difficult to manage them correctly.

TfL’s 500 uniformed enforcement officers and TfL's police partners will be out across the transport network ensuring that customers comply with the Government regulation. Anybody who does not comply may be refused entry, directed to leave the network or face a fine.

No e-scooters on TfL services

All privately-owned e-scooters and e-unicycles, including those that can be folded or carried, will be banned on London’s transport network from Monday 13 December. This is the result of safety concerns about these items following recent fires on TfL premises & services.

Customers in possession of such devices will not be permitted to enter any premises on TfL’s network or travel on any of its services, including on the Tube, buses, Overground, TfL Rail, Trams and DLR.

More information can be found on our website.

Buses and roads

Bus and road users may be affected by the following changes this weekend. We expect to run a good service, but buses may be delayed, diverted or stop short of their normal destination.

Friday 10 until Monday 13 December

A40 Westway closure

The A40 Westway will be closed eastbound from 22:00 on Friday 10 until 05:00 on Monday 13 December. Those travelling westbound will be able to use the A40 Westway as normal.

While the closure is in place, we expect local routes and the official diversion route to be busy. Long delays to your journey are likely. Please plan ahead and use routes such as the A4, M4 or the A406 for alternative ways into London.
This is the start of a programme of essential maintenance work which will continue until summer 2022. There are additional weekend directional closures planned for 2022. For more detail and the full programme please visit our travel advice webpage.

Until Thursday 16 December

A20 Bexley

Until Thursday 16 December, there will be a series of overnight closures of the A20 Sidcup Road and Sidcup Bypass while we carry out essential maintenance. The road will be closed in one direction at a time with work taking place between 22:00 and 05:00 each night, Monday to Friday.

Leave more time for your journey and follow the signed directions. For the latest information on how roads are operating in your area, check before you travel.

Westminster Bridge

Until late January 2022, Westminster Bridge will be restricted to one lane in each direction for all traffic. This is while we carry out essential works to improve the security of the bridge for those walking and cycling.

Until Thursday 9 December, motorised traffic will not be able to turn right from Westminster Bridge on to Victoria Embankment. A signed diversion will be in place around Parliament Square and Bridge Street. Cyclists will continue to be able to cross Westminster Bridge using dedicated cycle lanes.

While the works take place, delays across Westminster Bridge are likely and roads in the surrounding area are expected to be busy.

Please check before you travel and use alternative river crossings.
